About me

Jiaxu Liang is currently a postdoctoral researcher at Goethe University Frankfurt, working on a BMBF-funded project (05K22RF3) to develop and operate a world-unique experimental platform at the Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research (GSI). The facility combines swift heavy-ion irradiation with static pressures of up to 100 GPa in diamond anvil cells, enabling in situ studies of materials under extreme conditions. This research provides new opportunities to understand the behavior of matter relevant to planetary interiors, mineralogy, and materials science.

Jiaxu received his Ph.D. from the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology (NCNST), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), where he worked on the synthesis and applications of carbon-rich nanomaterials. He subsequently joined the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPIP) in Mainz, Germany, as a postdoctoral researcher. There, his research focused on the synthesis of nanodiamonds under high-pressure and high-temperature (HPHT) conditions. He participated in several interdisciplinary research initiatives, including ERC-funded BioQ, European Horizon 2020 AlternativesToGd and the European Horizon 2020 Hyperdiamond, which aimed to develop diamond-based quantum technologies for advanced molecular imaging and magnetic resonance applications.

His research interests are centered on the synthesis, transformation, and characterization of carbon-based materials at extreme conditions. Research areas include Synthesis of Functionalized Diamonds, Synthesis and Application of Carbon Nanostructures, and Carbon Structures at Extreme Conditions beyond HPHT.

Before embarking on his academic career, Jiaxu worked in the building materials industry, producing high-purity quartz glass. Interestingly, although his research is driven by scientific curiosity rather than aesthetics, it has led him to study a remarkable range of materials commonly associated with jewelry, including quartz crystals, diamonds, and gemstones.
